So it is with huge excitement that we have partnered with the FIH to bring you the Poligras Magic Skill Award in which fans have the chance to relive and vote for the most impressive skill of the 2021 / 2022 Pro League season.

The players have become entertainers, moving the ball as if by magic and hockey’s skills are unlimited.

Celebrating Hockey’s Evolution

This award is close to our hearts at Poligras. In our decades of partnership with hockey globally we have seen the game totally transform. Over recent years, the advent of aerial play, the 3D skills and 360-degree movement all played at electrifying pace are beyond anything we saw 40 years ago. The players have become entertainers, moving the ball as if by magic and hockey’s skills are unlimited. They have captivated young players looking to emulate their heroes and have grown the appeal of our sport to new audiences around the world.

The Turf Revolution

Turf has played its part in the skills explosion and we are proud to have been part of hockey’s transition.

The Skills Explosion

In 2003, Poligras introduced turf made from polyethylene fibres which were both more durable, and crucially, softer. This softness meant the ball sat on the surface better giving the players more control and allowing the ball to be moved at higher speeds. This innovation matched the arrival of ‘Turf Natives’ who replaced the grass generation and turbo-charged the game. These players led by 5 x player of the year Jamie Dwyer, took the game to new levels. With an enhanced surface, composite sticks added more power, and skills such as the drag flick and tomahawk become match winners.

Turf Technology Springboards Turf Natives

Poligras reimagined turfs again in 2014 with new texturized turf technology. This change in fibre shape removed the grain and any resistance to ball movement.

Ball control was now limitless, the skills could now be fully fluid, 360 degrees and 3D. This turf innovation was the launch pad as the Turf Natives added more rocket fuel to the game with greater control, creativity and speed.
