Hockey 5s Asia Cup, Oman 2023

 

A step forward for hockey’s short format.

Salalah, Oman, a lush city nestled at the foot of the Dhofar Mountains is famous for Frankincense and coconut. It has also earnt its place firmly on the hockey map as the host of the inaugural Men’s and Women’s 2023 Hockey 5s Asia Cup. The tournament which took place from 29 August to 2 September served as a crucial qualifier for the FIH Hockey 5s World Cup 2024 and marked another step forward for the growing short-form version of the game.

 
 

India, Pakistan, Oman and Malaysia secure World Cup places in the men’s tournament

In the men’s tournament, India emerged victorious with Pakistan taking silver and Oman clinching bronze. The host’s automatic qualification meant that Malaysia also secured their place at the FIH Hockey 5s World Cup 2024 in Oman alongside the top three teams in Salalah.

 
 
 

India, Thailand and Malaysia take top three spots in the women’s tournament

The women’s tournament saw India’s dominance continue with a 7-2 victory over Thailand in the final. Malaysia also secured their place at the World Cup with a 3rd place finish. Huge congratulations to all the winners who now begin their final preparations for Hockey 5s biggest stage in Oman.

 
 
 

A triumph for emerging hockey nations

Whilst the traditional hockey nations clinched the silverware, the tournament should be as celebrated for the teams who did not leave with medals. Hockey 5s is helping to provide a gateway for all countries to compete internationally and the presence of countries like Iran, Chinese Taipei, Kazakhstan and Afghanistan shows the depth and breadth of the game.

Poligras turf will set the stage for the Hockey5s World Cup 2024

The upcoming Hockey 5s World Cup 2024 which takes place from 28-31 January will be played on a Poligras turf installed by Polytan.
